Come explore one of Iowa’s natural wonders and beautiful views of the Loess Hills. In this workshop, we’ll take you to recognizable locations as well as hidden gems of Iowa’s Loess Hills during some of the more beautiful time of the year.
Where: With Onawa, Iowa as our base, we will visit select locations in Iowa’s western most counties, including Monona, Harrison and Pottawattamie.
When: Friday, October 12th – Sunday, October 14th
Group Size: We’re only accepting 8 participants. Keeping the group small will give us adequate elbowroom on location and allow for those desiring 1-on-1 coaching more time with us in the field. Smaller groups are simply better. You learn more, we’re more agile and able to move and react to our whims and the weather.
(A nonrefundable deposit of $250 is due at registration. The remainder is due 21 days before the workshop.)

Tentative Itinerary: We will be waking up early for sunrise each day and will shoot as long as the light is good in the morning before breaking for lunch. We’ll do some post processing instruction after lunch, and/or if weather is bad. Then we’ll likely grab an early dinner before going to shoot sunset. If skies are favorable, we’ll stay out for some astrophotography before turning in at the hotel for the evening.

Physical Ability: Many locations are easily accessible with little physical effort from where we park the vehicles. However, some locations and viewpoints do require trail hiking with elevation changes up to a couple hundred feet. The hiking would be considered easy to moderate and the distances will be typically less than 1 or 2 miles. If at any location, you feel out of your comfort zone, you’re welcome to shoot another location or wait for a more comfortable location.
Skill Level: Photographers of all skill levels are welcome on this workshop, whether you’d be intermediate, advanced, or a beginner. If you haven’t yet mastered shooting in either Aperture Priority or Manual Mode, we HIGHLY recommend going through Improve Photography’s Photography Start online course before the workshop. You’ll get much more out of the workshop having at least the basics under you beforehand.
Equipment: You don’t need fancy photography gear to shoot the beauty of Iowa’s Loess Hills. If you have a camera capable of shooting in manual mode, a tripod, and a lens, then you’re set. If you don’t have that, then consider renting what you need. If you have lens options available to you, the Loess Hills area will provide everything from wide angle (14-24mm) to telephoto (200-400mm) opportunities. Again, rental is always an option if you don’t own what you’d like to bring.
Accommodations: We have rooms blocked at the Super 8 in Onawa under Fall Color Photography 2018 for the nights of Thursday-Saturday, October 11-13 (checkout on October 14). This location will be our home base and will keep us within an hour’s drive from all of our planned locations. A basic hotel breakfast is offered starting at 6:00 am. Single rooms are $93.64 and double rooms are $98.96.
